INSIDE CAMP ARROWWOOD

By: John Bowling

Located on the edge of the

Great Smoky Mountain National

Park, is the fast growing Camp

Arrowwood. Executive Director of

the Camp is Seth Houser who has

been running the camp for going on

4 years. The Camp is centered in

Wears Valley Ranch, a private

children’s home for kids with

dysfunctional families. The Ranch is

a non-profit organization and the

camp was started to help raise money

for the Ranch. Kids from all over

the country come to visit Camp

Arrowwood every year. The kids

stay in a 4 room cabin. 2 rooms for

the boys and 2 rooms for the girls.

There is a dining hall for all the meals and that is where a lot of the games take place

also. The tennis courts are open for tennis lessons, and there is a 300’x70’ soccer

field for more outside games.

Every morning and night, the kids participate in a short devotion. They are

all handed pamphlets that have scriptures and questions in them and are required to

fill them out. Pastor Jim Wood, founder of Wears Valley Ranch, gives the kids a special devotion every night.

There are counselors and CIT’s (Counselors in Training) that help the kids to

go from one place to another and be in the cabins with them. The counselors join in

all the games but are more intent on watching the kids.

There are four different tracks that you can choose from. There is Adventure Rec which includes climbing the 55’ climbing tower. There is a tennis track that will give the

kids an opportunity to learn tennis. There is also an equestrian

track that gives kids the opportunity to take care of and ride

the horses. The last of the tracks is Energy Craze. Energy

Craze is a track where they do random things like duct tape

counselors to tables, make balloon towers, and go canoeing at

the lake.

Camp Arrowwood has lots of fun activities that will

keep the kids busy. There is not a minute of the day when

you are not busy doing something. It helps the kids to not be bored if there are lots of activities going on. So if your looking for a good place to

send your kids or even be a counselor, Camp Arrowwood is a good choice.
